When it comes to car ownership, few things are as frustrating as engine problems. If major trouble strikes the heart of your car or truck, you are likely going to hear strange noises coming from under the hood. Those sounds may soon turn into the ca-ching of a cash register if you don’t act quick. The longer you wait when it comes to engine problems, the more likely the need for an engine rebuild will become. However, critical issues can also occur without any form of advanced warning. At Engine House Inc., our Phoenix mechanics can often determine if an engine rebuild is necessary based on the following clues.
Signs it is time for engine rebuilding
Many engine problems can be resolved with minor repairs if caught early enough, but if the trouble is left unchecked, a rebuild may become necessary. It’s vital that you visit your local engine shop if you encounter any signs of engine trouble, such as:
PERFORMANCE LOSS: If your vehicle no longer accelerates, runs or idles like it used to, or suffers from poor fuel economy, visit the mechanic for proper engine diagnostics.
SHAKING & VIBRATING: If your vehicle seems to be rattling, it could mean that a broken piston ring is present. Any sort of shaking or vibrating needs to be checked by a pro.
DECREASED OIL PRESSURE: Oil consumption and low oil pressure are generally a sign that there is excessive clearance between engine parts. This will usually result in blue exhaust smoke.
POOR COMPRESSION: If you’re able to complete a compression test and find that it is poor, there is certainly an internal engine problem. This could be worn pistons or cylinder bore, a cracked cylinder head, burnt exhaust valves or a blown head gasket.
OVERHEATING & COOLANT LOSS: Bubbling coolant, a loss of coolant and engine overheating can indicate a variety of problems, but it is often related to a blown head gasket. This may not mean your vehicle needs a complete engine rebuild.
STRANGE ENGINE NOISES: As previously mentioned, odd sounds are a key indication of engine trouble. Some issues are certainly more serious than others, but none of them are good. Pay attention to knocking, rattling and ticks. If something doesn’t sound right, head to the mechanic for diagnostics.
What happens during an engine rebuild?
The goal of an engine rebuild is to restore the unit to like new condition, or better. In most cases, to properly rebuild an engine it needs to be removed from the vehicle, however quality in-frame rebuilds are possible depending on the make and model. Once removed the engine will be fully disassembled and parts will be inspected for wear or damage. Any that can be restored at the machine shop will be salvaged, while others may need to be replaced with new or rebuilt components. It is common to replace or rebuild many parts, such as gaskets, bearings, o-rings, seals, cylinder heads and others. Major parts may also be rebuilt or replaced depending on their needs. This can include crankshaft rebuilding or servicing the pistons and camshafts. Prior to reassembly the cylinders may be bored depending on their condition. Finally, the engine will be put back together and reinstalled in the vehicle.
